Mercury spilling by Yanacocha
Being peruvian, my parents pay an additional fee for the Latin cable, which includes SURPERU, that gives news straight from Peru. One day listening to the news, i heard about some new mines in Peru, specifically the Yanacocha gold mines, which were causing terrible damages to the people that live near the mines. Due to the hundreds of machinery and other mining instruments, mercury has leaked into the water that these people consume for their everyday chores. Mercury has also been spread throughout the cities near the mines in a solid form, which children come to think of as toys because they are shiny. children touch them and play around with these things, without understanding the great hazard that these little rocks can be.

After the spill of Mercury happened, many children were hospitalized. it was said that when one of the trucks full of mercury had passed by cities, the mercury had spilled and the truck driver had been aware of this, but still had not warned the people about the hazard that mercury was. Problem is not only that these people are getting sick, but also they dont have any money to go to a hospital and be seen by doctors. Hospitals are even refusing to see these contaminated people because they want the mine to say that they will take charge of all the fees.

Mines like these can make the economy of the country grow greatly, but is it really fair to get richer knowing that people out there are suffering because of the side effects of this new business? I dont think politicians in Peru have enough morals to understand that what they are doing is wrong, that they need to stop these mines from getting gold and mercury because it is causing much damage to the inhabitants of the zone.

On the other hand, this mine also should have more moral ethics and at least have some guts to accept the damage and suffering that they have given to this people, and give them some many, or at least pay for their medical expenses. These people are poor people that probably don't even know what mercury is, but they are also human beings and deserve a better treat than what has been given to them.
